Rosaleen disapproves of this but ultimately lets her keep it as she loves Lily. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter concern bees.
Ray and he agrees to leave Lily alone. This terrifies Lily because she loves Rosaleen. He and Lily ride to the theater to see if they can catch a glimpse of the celebrities.
Her relationship with Zach inspires her to be more creative and sensitive and she begins working toward becoming an English teacher in earnest because of his belief in her.
Lily lies about their earlier life and hopes to stay long enough to find out whether her mother was ever there. Ray soon arrives to bring Lily home but he does not bail out Rosaleen. The Daughters of Mary arrive and the festival involves much praying and celebration of the Virgin Mary.
Then, after Rosaleen is arrested for pouring her bottle of "snuff juice" on three white men, Lily breaks her out of the hospital and they decide to leave town. When Rosaleen goes to vote she is harassed for no reason by white men. Lily is not ready to let her mom off the hood, forgiving her for seeking her own health first and leaving Lily with T.
Earlier, Lily captured some bees in a jar, and now she sees they have escaped.
